Why Do We Crave Sugar?

There are many reasons why we go for sweet things.

That appetite may be hardwired. "Sweet is the first taste humans prefer from birth," says Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a dietitian and American Dietetic Association (ADA) spokeswoman. Carbohydrates stimulate the release of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin and junk food manufacturers have taken flavor science to extraordinary levels, and the artificial ingredients used to produce that sought after "bliss point" can seriously confuse and befuddle your body's metabolism.  The truth is, processed foods contain carefully orchestrated flavors and other sensory factors designed to be as addictive as possible. This is in stark contrast to whole foods, the taste and consistency of which was created by nature and therefore work with your body to satiate hunger and nutritional cravings.  Replacing processed foods with homemade meals made from scratch using plants and whole ingredients is an ideal and important way to ensure optimal nutrition. This will automatically cut out the vast majority of refined sugars, processed fructose, preservatives, dyes, other nasty chemicals, and many addictive ingredients from your diet.

Here are some other tips:

  1. Keep Your Blood Sugar Stable
    Eat several small, healthy Body Ecology meals throughout your day instead of three large portions to avoid dips in blood sugar. (Ideally, eat your animal protein meals between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.) Your evening meal should be one of our preferred gluten-free grain-like seeds (quinoa, millet, buckwheat, or amaranth). If you do this, your body will produce more serotonin, you'll feel happier, and you'll sleep much better at night.

  2. Have Plenty of Greens
    Loaded with nutrition, green drinks help boost your energy and reduce cravings for sugar and processed foods. Rich in vitamins and minerals, vegetables make for a healthy snacks too. Vegetables have a high mineral content, while eating anything with sugar immediately depletes minerals from your body.

  3. Enjoy Fermented Foods and Drinks
    Fermented foods and drinks are perhaps the most important way to reduce or even eliminate cravings for sugar. In fact, this one is so effective that we've heard from many of our customers that it nixes sugar cravings in about 4-5 days!
